This is my review and summary on The Wings That Bind By Briar Boleyn
So, I finally finished The Wings That Bind by Briar Boleyn. It is on the Wings of Blood series. This book kind of infuriated me and broke me all at the same time.
On Wings of Blood was great. They should probably put this into a movie.I would probably watch it.But the other two books just infuriated me more. The more I went, the more I just didn't want to finish, but I did finish. If you haven't read these books yet, please scroll on because there will be some spoilers in here There's a lot of bullying and stuff in this, so that's a trigger warning for you.But anyways, I'm going to start off with summaries and I'm going to go through the summaries of each book. And then I'll kind of discuss between there what I liked and what I didn't like about these books and go from there. So
on Wings of Blood, the story begins with Medra Pendragon
crawling out from a literal pile of corpses in the world of Syngrantha. She sacrificed her life in her old realm and woke up in this death pit where she is discovered by Blake
and his kind-hearted cousin Theo.
We all love Theo. So Blake's uncle Victor
is a true monster. He is the one who orchestrates Medra's capture and forces the engagement between her and (1
Blake. He is also engaged to Regan,
who is like the mean girl on Mean Girls. She is just the meanest.Victor uses physical beatings to keep Blake and Theo in line, creating a cycle of abuse that starts at the top. While at the Academy, Medra is tormented by Regan. Regan uses magical compulsions to humiliate Medra. Blake is often cold and arrogant, treating Medra like a second-class Blightborn. Medra finds a real family in Florence.
I love Florence. Florence is just awesome.I love Florence. I love Visha.
I love Theo
and Nyx and Neville.Rodriguez is awesome. I just don't like Blake. I just don't like him. kage is really good, too.
I like him a lot. She also becomes like a real family with Nyxaurus, her dragon. But I call him Nyx. So, if you see me say Nyx, that's who I'm calling him. She also rescues Neville the Fluffin, a creature who offers her the only real comfort in a school where she's pushed to her physical breaking point. She loves weapons training, and she's doing all this other stuff. By the end, Blake betrays Medra's trust entirely to appease Victor's nearly destroying her bond with Nyx.
Book 2, The Bond That Burns, Victor becomes a more active villain, revealing the ritual where Blightborn girls are sacrificed to keep the Highbloods powerful.Blake's behavior is at its most hateable here. He facilitates Medra's brutal sparring sessions, especially with Visha watching her get beaten bloody while claiming it's for her own good. Many readers, like me in particular, I hate this. I hate this because it feels like Blake is just another version of Victor. Or even he's almost like Marcus's brother because it's just like he's very, just very abusive in that way, mentally abusive, and just like, just, I just don't like him. Theo struggles to balance his loyalty to Blake with his care for Medra because he's treating Medra so bad, Theo hates it. Meanwhile we get to see more kage, who's another Highblood, begins to recognize the strength of Florence and Medra. He's very respectful to Florence and Medra. I would rather, like I said before, I would rather see him as the main male character because he is so respectful and so nice, and it just, he fits better with Medra and he fits better with that dynamic, at least that, to me, everybody has their own opinions, but for me, I would love to see more of him.Let's see, so Neville kind of remains by Medra's side, mostly Florence. He loves Florence and he kind of goes back between Florence and Blake all the time. And then Medra discovers that Victor isn't just a king, he's a predator. He's a predator who has been manipulated in bloodlines for centuries. Blake's, like, complicity in Victor's plans makes his relationship with Medra more toxic. Like, he's sitting there saying like, oh, I'm not going to do everything that Victor says, but then he turns around and does everything Victor says, like, I want to protect you, but I got to do what he says. And then like, it's just, it just doesn't make sense. It just, like, it'd be like one chapter, he'd say something, and then like the next chapter, he'd totally say the opposite. And so it was so confusing to me in this book, because it was going back and forth, back and forth. And I was like, what is it? Like, do you love her? Or do you hate her? Or do you, like, want to protect her? Or do you want to kill her? Like, it's just, it was just very, it was very infuriating, because it would be like one chapter, he was like, not being the best person in the world. And then the next chapter, he was fine. He was just very, I just didn't like him.
Book three of them, When That Binds. So this is where they try to kind of turn Blake and Regan into more heroes.I was not for it.I'm sorry. Regan played a excellent evil woman, an excellent evil person in this book series. So when they tried to make her nice, in like, whether like, you know, she was doing this to save her brother, and she was being mean, and stuff to save her brother And it was just, it's very confusing to me, because it was like, I don't know, like, I just don't understand it. Like, it was just, it was very, I just don't think, I don't know if it was maybe the flow, like, it just didn't flow right into that. And it just went from zero to 180 real super fast. I think that's where it got real hard for me. So also, Blake finally stands up to Victor, he's physically broken, allows Medra punch him repeatedly as a way of paying for his past abuse. And then, you know, Neville actually plays a key role in soothing the dragons during a final battle. The book kind of ends with, like, the defeat of Victor and the group taking over the throne. But it just, and then it kind of, you know, kind of, of course, there's a cliffhanger. So we don't know what happened to, like, Florence and her and Nix and stuff like that, which I would read the fourth book to kind of see what happens to Florence and Nix and what happened to them. But the problem I have is, is Blake and, and Regan's quick transformation between bad and good, it was just too much. But other than that, I would read the fourth one, I'm not saying anything. And if it was came out to be a show, I'd probably watch it.But I just don't like Blake's character. I really don't. I would rather take just Regan and not Blake only because it's just, he went from just really punishing her and bullying her to like nothing to I love you. And it's like, but anyways, I'll try to keep posting more summaries later on down the road. I'm reading the second one to the Shield of Sparrows. So maybe I can do a review on that. Well, thank you guys for listening. Bye!
